Forest Garden Organics
Nestled in the lush foothills of Sri Lanka’s Sabaragamuwa Province, Forest Garden Organics (FGO) is a thriving agroecological farm located in Rambukkana. This vibrant, community-driven initiative integrates ecological farming, traditional knowledge, and grassroots innovation within a dynamic, living landscape.
FGO is based on the forest garden model, a multi-layered agroforestry system that mimics the structure and function of natural forests. In this model, various plant species, ranging from ground-level herbs and vegetables to mid-level shrubs, fruit trees, and tall canopy species are cultivated in harmonious layers. This approach fosters biodiversity, enhances soil fertility, conserves water, and builds a self-sustaining ecosystem that requires minimal external inputs. No chemical fertilizers or pesticides are
used, making the farm a living example of regenerative agriculture.
The farm is managed by a collective of seasoned farmers and agroecology practitioners. They produce a diverse range of organic vegetables, fruits, spices, medicinal herbs, and forest products. Visitors will witness firsthand how traditional Sri Lankan farming wisdom is synergized with modern ecological practices to rebuild soil health, protect biodiversity, and foster resilience against climate challenges.
Beyond cultivation, Forest Garden Organics serves as a training and learning hub. It hosts workshops on seed saving, composting, ecological pest management, analog forestry, and natural farming techniques. These programs are tailored especially for women, youth, and smallholder farmers, promoting empowerment, food sovereignty, and community resilience.
FGO also supports local food systems by directly linking small producers with consumers through community-supported agriculture (CSA) models. This approach ensures fair prices for farmers while reducing dependency on exploitative market chains.
