Kandyan Home Gardens
The Ceylon Organic Farmers Association (COFA) is a community-based organisation consisting of 25 smallholder farmers from the Hedeniya area, Kandy. These farmers manage traditional Kandyan home gardens, cultivating a diverse range of spices including pepper, cloves, and nutmeg and may moor
All farms are organically certified by Control Union and hold Fairtrade certification, ensuring sustainable agricultural practices and ethical trade standards.
About Kandyan Home Garden Certification:
Kandyan Home Gardens are certified under organic and Fairtrade systems. Certification focuses on:
- Biodiversity conservation
- Soil and water preservation
- No use of synthetic fertilizers or pesticides
- Fair labor practices and community development
These gardens serve both ecological and economic purposes, promoting agroforestry, sustainable livelihoods, and climate resilience.
Visitors will get to :
- Visit Kandyan Home Gardens: A traditional, eco-friendly farming system unique to Sri Lanka’s central highlands. These gardens are multi-tiered and resemble a natural forest, combining spice crops with fruit trees, timber species, and medicinal plants.
- Witness Organic and Fairtrade Certified Farming: You’ll witness environmentally friendly practices, natural composting methods, and strict avoidance of synthetic chemicals.
- See the Farmer Association in Action: The COFA operates collectively, ensuring fair prices, group marketing, shared resources, and decision-making that empowers local farmers.
- Know about Certification and Compliance: COFA farmers are audited regularly to maintain their organic and Fairtrade status. The Fairtrade premium received by the association is reinvested in the community through:
- See distribution of farm equipment
- Witness providing of school books and educational support for children
- Support social welfare initiatives for farming families

- Weather in Danthure is hot and humid, so wear comfortable clothes.
- September is in the inter – monsoon searson. there might be occasional rain at evening time. Be ready.
Site Visit Experience
The Danthure site visit was held with a total of 72 participants, coordinated by Ms. Danushi. The visit was well supported by 13 interpreters who facilitated communication and 2 media personnel who took photos and videos of the activities.
