Kurunegala – Polpithigama CRM
Polpithigama village in the Kurunegala District was chosen because it is home to many small women’s groups that work collectively to strengthen their economy and build sustainable livelihoods. Through their women’s organization, they engage in a wide range of activities such as carbon home gardening, rotational farming, turmeric cultivation, bag and shoe production, fruit farming, educational programs, and animal husbandry, all aimed at creating a steady income and community resilience.
This journey echoes the story of Nyeleni: just as she struggled alone to meet her needs, today these women are working tirelessly, but together, to uplift their families and communities, moving towards greater economic independence.
Activities currently being carried out by women’s societies in the Kurunegala District under the Community Support Forum include:
- Organic gardening
- Revolving credit programs
- Collective gardening
- Auction systems
- Organising market fairs
- Yarn production
- Bag and shoe production
- Animal husbandry
- Fruit cultivation
- Pahanthira grinding (traditional spice milling)
- Spiritual and cultural programs
- Exchange programs
These initiatives show how grassroots women’s groups are not only sustaining their households but also weaving a stronger, self-reliant rural economy that embodies solidarity and innovation.
